The BMW Alpha became a reality thanks to Mark Atkinson & Mehmet Doruk Erdem, one of the most unusual and least probable alliances. An old school machinist and motorcycle builder from Utah joined forces with a high-tech industrial designer from Istanbul, resulting in this extraordinary BMW-powered project. About two years back, Mehmet posted his BMW Alpha concept online, inspired by the machines ridden by the legendary Bonneville racer Alp Sungurtekin. Looking like the ultimate marine predator, it got Mark ‘Makr’ Atkinson’s attention; he needed a winter project anyway. Why not turn those sleek concept renderings into a functioning motorcycle?

A BMW K75 donated the engine, but everything else had to be built or adapted to match the initial design. Mark was focused on the underpinnings of the bike, but as he approached the body fabrication, it became apparent that the designer’s input and expertise were needed. The collaboration worked like this: Mark would send pictures of individual parts, such as the saddle, Mehmet would model and refine them in 3D programs and then it would get built. Strange, possibly unusual – similar to the project at hand – but it seems to have worked beautifully. Take a good look at what resulted.
