2016 New York Motor Show – 2017 Audi R8 Spyder
The 2017 Audi R8 Spyder surprised no one at the 2016 New York Auto Show, although everyone expected it to show up, in the flesh; kind of odd, and intriguing as well. The 2017 Audi R8 Spyder V10 was available for admiration as soon as the first official photos and specifications showed up online – before its public appearance in New York. But that doesn’t make this vehicle less desirable.
The 2017 Audi R8 Spyder will first come in V10 guise, with the V10 Plus to be launched later this year. Speaking of that V10, the 5.2-liter engine will develop 540 hp and 540 Nm (398.3 lb-ft) of torque. Standard equipment includes the seven-speed S Tronic dual-clutch transmission and the quattro all-wheel-drive system, using an electro-hydraulically activated multi-plate clutch at the front axle. As such, the Spyder will do 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 3.6 seconds and max out at 318 km/h (197.6 mph).
The retro-looking retractable roof can be operated in just 20 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph). The rear window can also act as a wind restrictor, to reduce back draft when the top is down. The Spyder also benefits from a lightweight construction, thanks to extensive use of aluminum and carbon fiber. There are no drawbacks , none that I can see – aside of the fact I don’t own one, yet.
